Important information about the Maxpak
redevelopment project

The Maxpak site sits adjacent to the future site of the Somerville Community Path (just west of Lowell Street).

According to a covenent between the city and the developer (KSS), the abandoned rail line slated for the Somerville Community Path extension will be used by construction equipment to access the Maxpak site during its first phase of construction. This may affect the timing and funding of the next phase of development for the Somerville Community Path.

In response, the Somerville Bicycle Committee has put together a set of recommendations to the city, with the following aims:

  • Ensuring that KSS will leave the right-of-way in at least as good a condition as they found it (so that the path construction won't be adversely affected).
  • Looking into ways to get the old rails and ties removed before a temporary roadway is built for construction vehicles accessing the Maxpak site. This will cut down on noise and dust, and make future path construction faster, easier and less expensive.
  • Scheduling Maxpak redevelopment construction and path construction in a way that minimizes noise, dust and other disruption to local residents, especially those abutting the right-of-way.
  • Permenantly ensuring that public users of the Community Path will be allowed to go through the development to get between the path and Lowell Street
  • Looking into getting a temporary path built before the Maxpak redevelopment is finished.
  • Building an additional link (stairs and/or a ramp) between the path and Lowell Street.
  • Getting additional concessions from the developer to help maintain the path near the development, such as landscaping, benches, etc.
